Setting Up LimeWire

LimeWire is a file sharing program running on the Gnutella Network. It is open standard software running on an open protocol, free for the public to use. LimeWire allows you to share any file such as.mp3s, .avis, jpgs, tiffs, etc. Limewire is written in Java, and will run on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Sun, and other computing platforms. Publish your original content to the world without setting up a website!

Requirements

  1. This Solution requires that you have Java installed for your particular architechture i386 or x86_64.

Doing the work

Installing LimeWire

LimeWire is not incuded by default, to use LimeWire you first have to install it:

  1. Open your favorite browser and go to http://www.limewire.com/english/content/downloadfree2.shtml.

  2. In the section titled "LIMEWIRE BASIC v 4.18.8", select Get Basic or Get Pro, this will be based on whether or not you want to pay for all the features offered or just want the basic version of limewire.
  3. From the "Your almost Done!"  page please select "I will not use LimeWire for copyright infringement", as we here at FedoraSolved.Org do not condone copyright infringment.
  4. From the Download LimeWire page select  Linux (RPM - Redhat, Fedora) Note: Ensure that you download the file to your users home directory, if that is not your default download location, move the file downloaded to your users home directory.
  5. Open a terminal

  6. Change to your download dirctory by entering the following, substiute you actual  information this is only an example:

    cd /home/sglaser/downloads
  7. Install the LimeWire software by entering the following command:

    su -c 'rpm -Uvh --nodeps LimeWireLinux.rpm'
  8. At the password prompt enter roots passoword, Then press enter, This completes the installation of LimeWire.

How to test

  1. As your normal user select "Applications -> Internet -> Limewire", follow the steps to setup the LimeWire application if this is the first time you have executed this application.

Common problems and fixes

  1. Typically the only issue that will impact LimeWire is JAVA you need to ensure that it is installed properly in accordance with http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/java-i386/ which is the Sun Java Installation on an i386, or http://fedora64.org/desktop-64-posts/java-x86_64/ which is the Blackdown Java Installation on and x86_64.
