Oct 15 19:02:01 *    noosphere has quit (Connection timed out)
Oct 15 19:02:03 autopsy    We do not need to reserve a corporation name, however there are two forms I need to fill out. One of them is the articles of incorporation stuff and another is the certificate of existance, then we can move on from there.
Oct 15 19:02:05 autopsy    EOF
Oct 15 19:02:17 *    Sonar_Gal gives Sonar_Guy the floor.
Oct 15 19:02:20 Sonar_Guy    daMaestro: how hard would it be once we are done with the paperwork and everything to put a beg screen in the registration screen?
Oct 15 19:02:25 Sonar_Guy    eof
Oct 15 19:02:26 BobJensen    !
Oct 15 19:02:33 *    Sonar_Gal gives BobJensen the floor.
Oct 15 19:02:50 daMaestro    Sonar_Guy, not too hard at all
Oct 15 19:03:07 BobJensen    I should be getting enough $$ together to get us through the next year including the setting up the corp.
Oct 15 19:03:25 daMaestro    Sonar_Guy, i think a beg screen would be better suited for the left hand column
Oct 15 19:03:31 daMaestro    Sonar_Guy, on every page.
Oct 15 19:03:35 BobJensen    In this will be funds to move to a better hsoting solution than doing out of my office

Oct 15 19:04:22 Sonar_Guy    daMaestro: ok, but on the registration screen we want it there too.  EOF
Oct 15 19:04:26 *    Sonar_Gal gives daMaestro the floor.
Oct 15 19:05:19 daMaestro    if we want to save funds, we are allowed access to fedora.bandwidthmarket.com .. i have moved my plone site out to that server, it would not be hard to move the unity plone instances to that server
Oct 15 19:05:20 daMaestro    EOF
Oct 15 19:05:33 *    Sonar_Gal gives BobJensen the floor.
Oct 15 19:05:38 BobJensen    It is my hope that after this coming year "WE" will not have to put anymore money in to UNity and it can be self-supporting
Oct 15 19:05:38 daMaestro    Sonar_Guy, ok
Oct 15 19:05:59 Sonar_Guy    BobJensen: +1
Oct 15 19:06:00 corwyn    ?
Oct 15 19:06:08 Southern_Gentlem    +1
Oct 15 19:06:09 BobJensen    I would rather look to a paid hosting solution than using another connection

Oct 15 19:06:42 *    Sonar_Gal gives kanarip the floor.
Oct 15 19:07:05 kanarip    BobJensen, should we compare prices at that time, between the different providers and colocations?
Oct 15 19:07:11 kanarip    EOF
Oct 15 19:07:17 *    Sonar_Gal gives BobJensen the floor.
Oct 15 19:07:26 BobJensen    It will be a gift to unity essentially, We will do some price vs. service shopping
Oct 15 19:07:36 Sonar_Gal    +1
Oct 15 19:07:41 corwyn    +1
Oct 15 19:07:42 kanarip    +1

Oct 15 19:08:29 BobJensen    !
Oct 15 19:08:38 *    Sonar_Gal gives BobJensen the floor.
Oct 15 19:08:42 daMaestro    !
Oct 15 19:08:49 BobJensen    I will talk to Greg about any possible "infringment" if we do this
Oct 15 19:09:11 BobJensen    I don't want to spend money doing it if it becomes an issue later
Oct 15 19:09:14 BobJensen    EOF
Oct 15 19:09:22 *    Sonar_Gal gives daMaestro the floor.
Oct 15 19:09:23 Sonar_Guy    +1
Oct 15 19:10:50 daMaestro    BobJensen, ok, that is fine with me. we should look into dedicated servers that we can rebuild; if absolutely needed we can go with a vds that has a ton load of bandwidth.. but the main thing we need right now is the bandwidth. Also, the search system and plone instances *can* go on the same server so we don't *have* to use vmware or Xen .. though it would be preferable
Oct 15 19:11:19 BobJensen    !
Oct 15 19:11:31 daMaestro    also, i think redhat has 'fedora core' and as someone has said 'fedora' is just a hat .. so i think 'fedora unity' wont be any issue.. good to check though EOF
Oct 15 19:11:49 *    Sonar_Gal gives BobJensen the floor.
Oct 15 19:12:21 BobJensen    daMaestro: yes I am looking for one dedicated box that we can do what we want with and also maybe a couple fst "unlimited transfer" type machiens we can BT seed from

Oct 15 19:12:57 daMaestro    !

Oct 15 19:13:10 *    Sonar_Gal gives daMaestro the floor.
Oct 15 19:13:21 *    CyberSpy has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
Oct 15 19:14:00 daMaestro    unlimited transfer sucks; it is basically just a un metered link (unlimited) but they restrict the port.. it (IMHO) would be better to get a dedicated port with a transfer cap/per GB overage fees.. we are then able to burst for when we do releases
Oct 15 19:14:44 daMaestro    unlimited normally means they cap your max in/out and just don't track usage... we want a full port and usage fees EOF
Oct 15 19:14:49 *    Sonar_Gal gives BobJensen the floor.
Oct 15 19:14:52 BobJensen    Lets talk more about the needs for these connections after the task meeting in the open forum

Oct 15 19:17:06 BobJensen    Will the interuption this week there is not a lot to report ont he new server, I am hoping I can get Jon to help me pick up where left off on Monday and Tuesday

Oct 15 19:17:23 daMaestro    !
Oct 15 19:17:28 *    Sonar_Gal gives daMaestro the floor.
Oct 15 19:17:48 daMaestro    the new systems are pretty much a go.
Oct 15 19:18:14 daMaestro    i have to change the vpn over from tun to tap (i would like bridged connections) and then we can start issuing certs
Oct 15 19:18:31 daMaestro    i also have to write something up on how to generate a csr to be signed by the vpn ca
Oct 15 19:18:58 daMaestro    users need a ldap posix user and a vpn cert to get to the build.fedoraunity.org server
Oct 15 19:19:28 daMaestro    it has mock and then 4 build vms that allow for live/re-spins to be built... a local repo and a few other neat features
Oct 15 19:20:36 daMaestro    to streamline the re/live-spins i have to get the soap stuff done, that might take me some time.. until then, bob, scott and I can issue the builds as we will have ssh access to the build vms eof
Oct 15 19:21:19 Sonar_Gal    ok and 5
Oct 15 19:21:31 Sonar_Gal    5. # Create back-up of the servers Unity01, and Unity03 every sunday after the meeting. Also create a backup prior to any major configuration change.

Oct 15 19:21:31 Sonar_Gal        * ASSIGNED: Bob Jensen
Oct 15 19:21:32 Sonar_Gal              o NOTES: Backup, Backup, Backup!! Need to find a way to automate this process.
Oct 15 19:21:38 Sonar_Guy    !
Oct 15 19:21:44 *    Sonar_Gal gives Sonar_Guy the floor.
Oct 15 19:22:48 Sonar_Guy    Steve and I went through all the posts and verified that they are ready for the FC6 release, we had an issue with the gdesklets post and have expired it so as not to be displayed since all the links are broken.
Oct 15 19:23:02 daMaestro    !
Oct 15 19:23:02 *    nman64 has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
Oct 15 19:23:25 Sonar_Guy    Other than that post all other posts look good, we did not proof out the x86_64 posts as we had no way to do that in VM currently.
Oct 15 19:23:27 Sonar_Guy    EOF
Oct 15 19:23:42 *    Sonar_Gal gives daMaestro the floor.
Oct 15 19:24:02 daMaestro    i will update the links (the source for starterbar is missing so i will tar up my local copy and add it to our site) and then bring it live again... i have no way to tell if it works for fc6, but it should still work for fc5 (it is working for me) EOF
Oct 15 19:24:20 Sonar_Guy    +1
Oct 15 19:24:20 corwyn    !
Oct 15 19:24:23 daMaestro    the gdesklets people changed stuff around and then didn't recreate the data*
Oct 15 19:24:24 Sonar_Guy    !
Oct 15 19:25:17 daMaestro    sorry EOF
Oct 15 19:25:26 *    Sonar_Gal gives corwyn the floor.
Oct 15 19:25:27 corwyn    I have an issue with that, since the gdesklet's sites are down and inaccessible, we don't even know if there is continued support. I suggest we hold off on it until we know what's happening with them.
Oct 15 19:25:40 corwyn    eof
Oct 15 19:25:45 daMaestro    !
Oct 15 19:25:52 *    Sonar_Gal gives Sonar_Guy the floor.
Oct 15 19:26:59 Sonar_Guy    I know that gdesklets is still in production, they just moved their site. Jon that will be fine if you update it once done just remove the expiration date and it will be again displayed.  I also removed all of our
Oct 15 19:27:27 Sonar_Guy    install posts and replaced them with a link to the official docs project installation guide.
Oct 15 19:27:32 daMaestro    X
Oct 15 19:27:44 *    nman64 (n=n-man@fedora/nman64) has joined #fedora-unity
Oct 15 19:28:28 Sonar_Guy    All of the sites have been done, and any steps/links that existed to legacy products has been removed so all we are covering is FC5 and FC6 the active releases.
Oct 15 19:28:29 Sonar_Guy    EOF
Oct 15 19:28:38 *    Sonar_Gal gives daMaestro the floor.
Oct 15 19:28:52 Sonar_Gal    ok daMaestro Skipped
Oct 15 19:29:05 Sonar_Gal    Anything else that needs to be discussed on this matter?
Oct 15 19:29:20 *    Sonar_Gal now opens the floor for discussion.
Oct 15 19:29:51 kanarip    how about colocation?
Oct 15 19:30:13 BobJensen    colocation requires hardware
Oct 15 19:30:23 BobJensen    and manytimes has limited support
Oct 15 19:30:23 corwyn    and a hosting provider
Oct 15 19:30:34 kanarip    a hosting provider, that was it
Oct 15 19:30:38 daMaestro    sorry X was stated :-P
Oct 15 19:30:57 kanarip    BobJensen, if you'd have the console, and power switch, would that be enough?
Oct 15 19:31:01 Sonar_Gal    daMaestro, Sorry I didn't see it and set it up when you wanted the floor
Oct 15 19:31:06 corwyn    one that's close to someone that will be able to go and deal with things if issues occur
Oct 15 19:31:39 daMaestro    no colocation
Oct 15 19:31:49 BobJensen    I would rather rent someone elses Box and let them "take care" of hardware failues I think
Oct 15 19:31:49 daMaestro    we we are going to colocate we should just use the free fedora.bandwidthmarket.com
Oct 15 19:31:56 daMaestro    BobJensen, ++
Oct 15 19:32:06 daMaestro    we don't want to deal with hardware
Oct 15 19:32:10 daMaestro    we just want a fast link
Oct 15 19:32:14 corwyn    I agree with Bob
Oct 15 19:32:22 kanarip    isn't that relatively expensive?
Oct 15 19:32:47 BobJensen    kanarip: we will have to see
Oct 15 19:32:52 daMaestro    no
Oct 15 19:32:57 corwyn    kanarip: that's why we're gearing up to be able to collect donations
Oct 15 19:33:04 corwyn    so we can afford such things
Oct 15 19:33:08 BobJensen    should not be real bad for what we get in return IMO
Oct 15 19:33:11 kanarip    i mean, i know how much it costs here...
Oct 15 19:33:19 daMaestro    if we can sneak by with a well supported vds, we can do it for about $50/month with a few TB of bandwidth
Oct 15 19:33:23 corwyn    without group individuals having to put out of pocket
Oct 15 19:33:38 daMaestro    otherwise it will end up being about $100/month with the amount of bandwidth we want
Oct 15 19:33:44 kanarip    if i place a box, it costs about 95 euros, if i rent one, it's about 430 euros (a month)
Oct 15 19:33:57 daMaestro    kanarip, wow..
Oct 15 19:34:04 daMaestro    much cheaper in the states
Oct 15 19:34:14 kanarip    daMaestro, this is the most expensive :)
Oct 15 19:34:44 kanarip    with lots, lots of service
Oct 15 19:34:53 daMaestro    it is also cheaper if we get a year lease
Oct 15 19:35:03 BobJensen    We will also look for deals seeing that we will ne no-prifit by then
Oct 15 19:35:07 daMaestro    about $60/month
Oct 15 19:35:16 daMaestro    BobJensen, yeah.. we should try to get something donated
Oct 15 19:35:35 daMaestro    if the group does not mind "bandwidth provided by" i'm sure we can do it for free
Oct 15 19:35:38 nman64    Two providers I'd recommend looking at are Rimu Hosting (NZ) and Rackspace (San Antonio).  Both offer special discounts/arrangements for non-profit open source groups.
Oct 15 19:36:13 *    Em has quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
Oct 15 19:36:25 corwyn    NZ= new Zealand?
Oct 15 19:36:29 nman64    Yes.
Oct 15 19:36:30 Sonar_Guy    nman64: +1
Oct 15 19:36:31 corwyn    no
Oct 15 19:36:43 corwyn    let's keep our setup in the US
Oct 15 19:36:53 daMaestro    ok, so we need a lead to approach rackspace
Oct 15 19:37:02 Sonar_Gal    then we need to check out rackspace
Oct 15 19:37:04 BobJensen    again IMO we are looking for three things, 1 web Sites, 2 Fast Fast Fast connection for the re-spin releases, 3 lots of transfer for the re-spins
Oct 15 19:37:05 corwyn    I may know someone that works there
Oct 15 19:37:15 corwyn    not sure if he's still there, I'll find out
Oct 15 19:37:18 nman64    I can get some contacts.
Oct 15 19:38:15 BobJensen    If we work on those three areas thinking abotu the benefits of the different packages out there I think we should be able to stay under $200 permonth for the three
Oct 15 19:38:24 daMaestro    wow.. their basic plans really don't have the bandwidth we are looking for
Oct 15 19:38:36 daMaestro    we need 2TB/month+
Oct 15 19:38:43 BobJensen    daMaestro: for the sites?
Oct 15 19:38:57 daMaestro    BobJensen, we should just do one server
Oct 15 19:39:06 daMaestro    easier for managing, billing, support ,etc
Oct 15 19:39:13 BobJensen    daMaestro: I disagree, we have very special needs
Oct 15 19:39:39 daMaestro    well i don't know our funding situation, just trying to support saving money
Oct 15 19:39:46 BobJensen    daMaestro: I think if we look for specialized services to meet our needs we will be better off
Oct 15 19:40:38 daMaestro    BobJensen, i agree, but funding is the only issue.. that said two servers (one for systems hosting and one for torrent hosting) would be best
Oct 15 19:40:52 daMaestro    the first could be a simple server will little storage, minimal bandwidth
Oct 15 19:41:09 daMaestro    the second can be a POS, but we need tons of storage and bandwidth
Oct 15 19:41:55 daMaestro    oh, and we should look at building live usb images for different size usb sticks
Oct 15 19:42:10 daMaestro    i am working on that right now.. and i think it could easily be added to the re-spin script
Oct 15 19:42:24 BobJensen    My idea was
Oct 15 19:42:26 BobJensen    System 1
Oct 15 19:42:26 BobJensen            Web and Mail Server
Oct 15 19:42:26 BobJensen
Oct 15 19:42:26 BobJensen    System 2
Oct 15 19:42:26 BobJensen            Release Week Seed
Oct 15 19:42:26 BobJensen
Oct 15 19:42:30 BobJensen    System 3
Oct 15 19:42:32 BobJensen            Steady Seed
Oct 15 19:42:47 BobJensen    System 1 would take the place of Unity01 now
Oct 15 19:43:05 corwyn    daMaestro: that could be turned into a source of income too, even for an non-profit. Selling preloaded, logo'd usb sticks from our sites
Oct 15 19:43:06 daMaestro    system one: everything but torrent (ldap, plone, mail, etc) system two: torrent tracker and seeder
Oct 15 19:43:11 BobJensen    Syatem 2 we would want a limited transfer permonth but super fast
Oct 15 19:43:17 daMaestro    corwyn, yes!
Oct 15 19:43:26 corwyn    all proceeds go back into the org
Oct 15 19:43:32 daMaestro    corwyn, exactly.. we can get a 512MB usbstick with a logo for $11
Oct 15 19:43:44 BobJensen    system 3 would be one of those "unlimited transfer" deals
Oct 15 19:43:47 corwyn    now that'd be cool
Oct 15 19:44:16 daMaestro    BobJensen, i don't think we are going to see any good unlimited transfer deals and it is going ot be a waste of money
Oct 15 19:44:23 corwyn    we need to come up with our own logo though
Oct 15 19:44:26 daMaestro    put the extra money back into server2 and we should be fine
Oct 15 19:44:36 corwyn    anyone good with graphics design?
Oct 15 19:44:53 daMaestro    corwyn, i have a friend that is working on some fedora unity stuff
Oct 15 19:44:56 Southern_Gentlem    all this is fine after we get the funds to even look
Oct 15 19:45:01 daMaestro    corwyn, i will try to push him along
Oct 15 19:45:18 BobJensen    daMaestro: SailBoat just got one the speeds are good unlimited GB transfer and you can BT from it, $9.95 per month
Oct 15 19:45:24 corwyn    Southern_Gentlem: agreed, but we can also get some basic thoughts down
Oct 15 19:45:32 daMaestro    Southern_Gentlem, i think the underlining of this discussion to to seek a dollar amount of funding for one year operations
Oct 15 19:46:07 kanarip    do we know how much funding is needed, or can we estimate?
Oct 15 19:46:22 daMaestro    kanarip, i think that is what this dicussion is about.. to identify needs
Oct 15 19:46:39 Sonar_Guy    kanarip: that is what this discussion is about, determine needs, then estimate annual costs!!
Oct 15 19:46:42 kanarip    i've heard 1, 2, 3 servers, i've heard usb sticks...
Oct 15 19:46:42 Sonar_Gal    we need to check out pricing and bandwith and all that and see what it will cost anually to see where we can go from there
Oct 15 19:47:33 kanarip    someone's gotta describe what we will need, instead of what we want
Oct 15 19:47:42 BobJensen    shit http://www.hostmonster.com/ will check out the details from SaiBoat
Oct 15 19:47:42 Sonar_Gal    how many servers are needed to get started on this 2 or 3 and all that info will be needed
Oct 15 19:48:01 corwyn    afk brb
Oct 15 19:48:04 daMaestro    BobJensen, then i don't see why we don't have a basic vds/vps (that we can rebuild) with enough support for what unity01 does now (looking at like $50/month) and then that plan you speak of for unlimited bandwidth
Oct 15 19:48:37 daMaestro    i vote 1 or 2
Oct 15 19:48:58 daMaestro    i see the point in scaling bandwidth services between two servers for our different needs
Oct 15 19:49:33 corwyn    back
Oct 15 19:49:35 daMaestro    3 is overkill.. i think what the 3rd server (system 2) would do can be done with our personal connections
Oct 15 19:49:37 kanarip    that is if a provider let's you scale and adjusts it's prices accordingly, right?
Oct 15 19:50:21 daMaestro    i also think that system 2's job could be done by a hatter box
Oct 15 19:50:38 Sonar_Guy    hatter bos?
Oct 15 19:50:42 Southern_Gentlem    i say get pricing and setup a wish budget
Oct 15 19:50:47 Sonar_Guy    *box
Oct 15 19:50:52 daMaestro    Sonar_Guy, red hat colo'd machine
Oct 15 19:50:58 Sonar_Guy    Ok
Oct 15 19:51:16 daMaestro    BobJensen, do we have any information about if fedora proper is going to allow us any seed bandwidth?
Oct 15 19:51:34 daMaestro    i'm pretty sure we can get a Xen guest
Oct 15 19:51:36 BobJensen    daMaestro: will ping gregdek about that tomorrow
Oct 15 19:51:51 daMaestro    at least what i take from the -infrastruture meetings
Oct 15 19:52:00 daMaestro    s/what/from what/
Oct 15 19:52:38 nman64    I've just sent a message to my first Rackspace contact.
Oct 15 19:52:42 BobJensen    talking to SailBoat on the phone now, he will let me know by wednesday abotu BT on hosemonster
Oct 15 19:53:00 BobJensen    hostmonster
Oct 15 19:53:04 daMaestro    ok, well it seems we want to look at two setups, one main server for plone, ldap and mail
Oct 15 19:53:16 daMaestro    and one or two more for bittorrent
Oct 15 19:53:34 >nman64<    find out if Chris Holtje still works there, if so, i'll see what I can do through him
Oct 15 19:53:39 kanarip    do we need to list specs for those servers as well?
Oct 15 19:53:45 daMaestro    i guess we should just put the request out asking people to submit their ideas for what our systems should look like.. and include example pricing data and sources
Oct 15 19:53:52 daMaestro    it would be nice
Oct 15 19:53:59 daMaestro    but we really don't need anything too fancy
Oct 15 19:54:09 daMaestro    if push comes to shove.. i can host the search system again.
Oct 15 19:54:13 corwyn    we need functional, not fancy
Oct 15 19:54:24 daMaestro    so ignore it's requirements
Oct 15 19:54:30 kanarip    daMaestro, talking about the search system...
Oct 15 19:54:42 BobJensen    Send the ideas and links to the server-team list
Oct 15 19:54:52 daMaestro    BobJensen, i think the server-team list eats mail
Oct 15 19:54:53 kanarip    i heard you mention an engine to search rpms, so i played around a little
Oct 15 19:54:54 daMaestro    let me check
Oct 15 19:55:20 BobJensen    Sonar_Gal: close the meeting or did I miss it?
Oct 15 19:55:25 Sonar_Gal    ok
Oct 15 19:55:29 BobJensen    we will yack all night
Oct 15 19:55:45 kanarip    i've gathered around 1 GB of data off over 15.000 packages...
