Configuring your network with system-config-network

Applicable to Fedora Versions

  • Fedora 8

Requirements

Explanation of requirements.
  1. Wired or Wireless device you wish to configure with NetworkManager

Doing the Work

Basic description of what will be done and what is expected.

  1. Start system-config-network
  2. su -c 'system-config-network'
    or from the Menu, System > Administration > Network

  3. Select the Wireless Network Device you wish to configure and click edit

  5. To allow NetworkManager to control both your wired and wireless devices you need to make the following changes.

  6. Tick "Controlled by NetworkManager"
    Untick "Activate device when computer starts"
    Click OK to save the changes
  7. Select the Wired Network Device you wish to configure and click edit

  8. To allow NetworkManager to control both your wired and wireless devices you need to make the following changes.
  9. Tick "Controlled by NetworkManager"
    Untick "Activate device when computer starts"
    Click OK to save the changes
    File Save
    File Quit
  10. Reboot the machine for the changes to take effect.

  1. Check that system-config-network and NetworkManager have been setup to work together.
  2. After rebooting you should see the NetworkManager Icon in the top right hand corner of the screen and the choice of a wireless or wired network connection

Common problems and fixes

  • How do I setup a static IP address with system-config-network and NetworkManager?
NetworkManager and system-config-network do not handle support for  static IP addressing very well.

Better support of static IP addresses is planned and in-progress for NetworkManager in the future.
